How to prepare for a remote voice recording task

Voice recording work from home starts with a clear brief. Use this guide to prepare for a speech data task, then follow the instructions supplied for the actual project.

Understand what you are being asked to record

A speech data task can ask you to read written prompts or take part in a spontaneous conversation. Our custom collection work includes both. Read the full invitation before recording: the language, dialect, region, device and setting can all be part of the requirement.

Use your own voice and describe your language background accurately. A regional accent can be the reason a project needs a particular speaker. Ask for clarification if the brief asks for something you cannot provide.

Check the setup before buying equipment

Start with the specified device and recording method. A project may require a phone, a headset or another setup, so a studio microphone is not a universal requirement. Confirm what is needed before buying anything.

  • Check that the correct microphone is selected and the recording app has access to it.
  • Confirm the required room or environment. Follow the brief if it calls for a particular background condition.
  • Keep the device position steady during your test.
  • Use the project’s recording settings. Ask about missing settings instead of choosing a sample rate or file format at random.

Make a short test and listen back

Before starting the full task, record a short test using the intended setup. Listen to it from beginning to end. Check whether the opening words are missing, the voice sounds distorted or another sound covers the speech.

If the test is hard to hear, adjust the setup and try again before producing more recordings. Keep a note of what you changed. Our collection workflow checks audio conditions and includes human review, so reviewing your own test is useful preparation.

Match your delivery to the task

For scripted speech, check whether the words must be read exactly and what to do after a mistake. For conversation, check the topic, partner instructions and any rules about personal information. Speaking naturally does not mean ignoring the project guideline.

Do not edit, denoise or otherwise process a recording unless the instructions ask you to. If a take goes wrong, follow the specified retry procedure so the submitted file matches what the reviewer expects.

Review the project terms before accepting

Check the task length, submission method, deadline, review criteria and payment terms before agreeing to participate. Read the recording consent carefully: SpeechData.ai’s collection work requires explicit commercial-use consent before recording.

An account is a starting point for recruitment. It does not mean there is a task available for every language or location, or that every registered contributor will receive an invitation.
