Differences

What differs across the European languages

Western and Southern Europe

European Spanish, French, European Portuguese, German, Dutch, Italian, Greek and Catalan

A model trained on Latin American Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese needs native data from Spain and Portugal, since the European varieties differ in sound and vocabulary. Spoken French drops much of what its spelling keeps, and German and Dutch build long compound words.

Nordic countries

Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finnish

Swedish and Norwegian have pitch accent, Danish softens and drops sounds its spelling keeps, and Finnish, unrelated to the other three, builds long words from suffixes. In all four, everyday speech departs from the written form, and in Norwegian and Finnish the gap is large.

Central and Eastern Europe

Polish, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Croatian and Serbian

Most are Slavic languages, all but Bulgarian with case endings that multiply word forms, and in close pairs such as Czech and Slovak, Russian and Ukrainian, or Croatian and Serbian, each language needs its own native data. Romanian is a Romance language, and Hungarian isn't Indo-European.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many speakers does each European dataset have?

Speaker counts are 50 for German, Catalan, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finnish; 150 for Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Croatian and Serbian; 100 for the other 12. If your model has to handle many different voices, compare speakers as well as hours.

Can I license several European languages together?

Yes. Each dataset is licensed at its own published price, with volume and multi-language discounts on request. All 22 share one format: dual-channel audio of spontaneous two-person conversation, time-aligned and human-verified transcripts, and the same speaker metadata, so they combine into one multilingual training set.

How much does European speech data cost?

List prices are per hour of audio: $75 for Italian, Catalan, Croatian and Serbian; $90 for Czech, Slovak and Hungarian; $95 for French, German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finnish; $85 for the other 8. Each dataset page shows its price, and volume and multi-language discounts are available on request.

Can you record other European languages?

Yes. Other languages, such as Icelandic, Estonian or Lithuanian, can be recorded to spec by native speakers, scripted or spontaneous, with time-aligned transcripts and documented consent. We confirm feasibility and send a quote within one business day.
